Airfares and tourism increase with the temperature in July and August. May, June, and September have fewer vacationers and cooler, rainier days. Cold and wet weather is never a surprise in Germany: between one-third and one-half of the days each year bring some precipitation, and even in summertime hailstorms can blow across blue skies with no warning. In June and July, school groups overrun state-run HI hostels, bringing noise, confusion, and hallway soccer in their wake—don’t say we didn’t warn you. Larger cities typically sport better non-HI offerings. In the winter, some German hostels close and museum hours may be shortened. Winter sports gear up in November and continue through April; peak season for skiing is mid-December to March. For charts listing average temperatures and national holidays, see Appendix.
