Motorized bikes and mopeds don’t use much gas, can be put on trains and ferries, and are a good compromise between costly car travel and the practical limits of bicycles. However, they’re uncomfortable for long distances, dangerous in the rain, and unpredictable on rough roads. Always wear a helmet and never ride with a backpack. Expect to pay about $50 per day, $75 on the weekend. Try auto repair shops, and remember to bargain. Opt for a Vespa to fully realize your European-cool. Motorcycles are more expensive and normally require a license, but are better for long distances. Before renting, ask if the price includes tax and insurance, or you may be hit with an unexpected fee.
