Germany has a significant minority population composed mainly of about two million Turks. Travelers may notice that some Germans harbor resentment towards this burgeoning population, which first arrived in Germany during post-WWII years as Gastarbeiter (guest workers). Since then, many Turks have settled and prospered in Germany. Still, there have been significant cultural and religious clashes. Tensions between Turks and ethnic Germans are palpable in parts of major cities. In particularly tense neighborhoods, dark-skinned travelers and those of Middle-Eastern descent should be especially cautious.
In certain regions, especially in large cities in former East Germany, minority tourists may feel threatened by small but vocal neo-Nazi groups. While they represent only a small fraction of the population, neo-Nazi skinheads have been known to attack foreigners, especially non-whites. In these areas, common sense and caution will serve you best.
