During the 18th century, flute-playing King Friedrich II (known as Frederick the Great) lead Brandenburg-Prussia to become the ascendant state in Germany. In 1806, Napoleon conquered the remains of the Holy Roman Empire, creating a subservient Confederation of the Rhein until the Wars of Liberation ousted Napoleon from Germany. The 1815 Congress of Vienna partially restored the pre-war German state system by establishing the Austrian-led German Confederation, which set up the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848. Internal conflicts weakened this movement and the old order was restored when Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck lead three successful wars, the final one against France, between 1864 and 1871. Wilhelm Kaiser of the German Reich was crowned at Versailles, commencing the second reich.
