The following phrasebook is meant to provide only the very rudimentary phrases you will need in your travels. Nothing can replace a full-fledged phrasebook or a pocket-sized English-German dictionary. German features both an informal and formal form of address; in the tables below, the polite form follows the familiar form in parentheses. In German, all nouns can take any one of three genders: masculine (taking the article der; pronounced DARE), feminine ( die; pronounced DEE), and neuter ( das; pronounced DAHSS). All plural nouns also take the die article, regardless of their gender in the singular.
