The second largest Hawaiian island has a smaller population than you’d expect, making Maui popular with visitors who are looking for sophisticated diversions and amenities in the small, intimate towns peppered throughout the island. Maui has been able to stave off the rampant development of Oahu while maintaining more accessible attractions than some of its more remote neighboring islands. From beaches that have repeatedly been voted among the best in the world to the scenic heights of Haleakala Crater to the countless waterfalls along the drive to Hana , a visit to “The Magic Isle” is sure to astound. Maui beckons adventurers, though many Maui adventures require less heartiness than those of the Big Island and Kauai. Helicopter tours run out of Kahului , dolphin- and whale-watching cruises leave from Maalaea , and snorkel trips to Molokini are popular in Kihei . Paia beaches are prime surfing and windsurfing spots, and within Haleakala National Park , several companies offer bike tours. The surf spot Jaws is known for its immense waves that are too big to tackle without motorized assistance—surfers have jet skis tow them in.
Though Maui has grown commercial, the identity of the island community remains strong and is constantly evolving. The island provides some of the best opportunities for visitors to learn actively about Hawaii’s past and present. Maui’s Iao Valley State Park is a battlefield where Kamehameha I won a victory over the rival king of Oahu, and its Iao Needle, a 2250 ft. natural stone pillar, is named after the phallus of sea god Kanalou. Maui Nei leads a historical tour of the once thriving whaling port of Lahaina from a Native Hawaiian perspective. The Hana Cultural Center preserves Hawaiian history and culture with unique quilts and woodcarvings.
