Travel by boat between the Hawaiian islands has been a point of much controversy. The Hawaii Superferry, a luxurious 450ft. ferry, thought to be the largest aluminum ship ever built in the United States, was planned to be the first ferry to carry cars (up to 286), trucks, and 866 passengers between Honolulu, Oahu; Kahului, Maui; and Lihue, Kauai. The ferry has faced much opposition from both environmentalists concerned about the effect it will have on Hawaii’s natural flora and fauna and from Hawaiian locals concerned about the loss of their traditional lifestyle. In Dec. 2007, the boat first began operating between Oahu and Maui; time will tell whether Kauai will follow suit. Private companies also operate ferries with routes between Maui and Lanai and Maui and Molokai.
