Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 2400 mi. (3900km) southwest of the coast of California. It is the most isolated populated landmass in the entire world. At approximately the same latitude as central Mexico, it is the southernmost US state and the 7th smallest in area, spanning 10,931 sq. mi. The archipelago stretches 2000 mi., making it the world’s longest island chain, and it contains 132 islands and atolls, all of which are the result of volcanic activity. There are eight major Hawaiian islands, only seven of which are inhabited, and with the exception of the large but uninhabited Kahoolawe, most of the rest are too small to make human occupancy viable. Of the seven inhabited islands, six are frequented by visitors to the state and are known as the main islands.
