Like the rest of the US, Hawaii uses the English system. The basic unit of length is the foot (ft.), which is divided into 12 inches (in.). Three feet make up one yard (yd.), and one mile (mi.) is made up of 1760 yards. Fluids are measured in US gallons (gal.), each divided into 128 US fluid ounces (fl. oz.). The basic unit of weight is the pound (lb.), which is divided into 16 ounces (oz.). One short (US) ton is 2000 lbs. Gallons in the US and those in Britain are not identical: one US gallon equals 0.83 Imperial gallons. Pub aficionados will note that an Imperial pint (20 oz.) is larger than its US counterpart (16 oz.).
