adobo: Filipino pork or chicken cooked in vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic

ahi: yellowfin tuna

azuki: sweetened red or black beans

crack seed: popular snack of dried fruits with salt, sugar, and seasonings

dim sum: Chinese brunch of appetizer-size food, often served with tea

haupia: coconut pudding

huli huli chicken: chicken barbecued on spits over an open grill

laulau: pork, butterfish, beef, or chicken wrapped in taro leaf and then baked or steamed in an imu

li hing mui: preserved plum, a type of crack seed

lilikoi: passion fruit

limu: edible seaweed

loco moco: a fried egg on top of a hamburger, served with rice and gravy

lomi salmon: cold diced salmon, tomatoes, and onion

kalua pig: barbecued pork, cooked whole in an imu (underground oven)

katsu: pork or chicken dipped in bread crumbs and deep-fried

kimchee: Korean spicy pickled cabbage seasoned with garlic, chiles, and other spices

kona coffee: coffee from beans grown in the Kona District of the Big Island

kulolo: dessert made of baked taro root mixed with coconut milk and honey or sugar

mahi mahi: dolphinfish that can be broiled, grilled, baked, or poached

malasadas: sweet Portuguese doughnuts without a hole

mochi: cakes made out of rice

musubi: rice ball wrapped in dried seaweed (often made with Spam)

nori: dried, compressed seaweed

onaga: red snapper

ono: fish similar to mackerel or tuna

opihi: island limpets (a shellfish delicacy)

plate lunch: two scoops white rice, macaroni salad, and a local-style meat or seafood entree

poi: purple paste-like food made of pounded taro root

poke: appetizer consisting of cubed raw fish, served with seaweed

saimin: Japanese ramen-like noodle soup

shave ice: shaved ice topped with syrup, flakier than a snow cone

shoyu: Japanese word for soy sauce

ulu : breadfruit
