The highland’s star attraction is undoubtedly the magnificent Maya site of Copán, but there’s so much more: forest-covered mountain ranges call to the outdoor enthusiast while time-warped colonial towns charm romantics. Along the busy highway between Tegus and San Pedro Sula, the first noteworthy stop is colonial Comayagua, the country’s first capital. Not far north lies the relaxing Lago de Yojoa, the country’s largest lake, and the fabulous waterfall, Catarata de Pulhapanzak. The rest of the region’s attractions are farther west, most easily accessible from San Pedro Sula or across the border in Guatemala and El Salvador. After exploring the majesty of Parque Nacional Celaque, travelers recoup in the nearby colonial towns of Gracias and Santa Rosa de Copán.
