Though the silky white-sand beaches and world-class diving off the Bay Islands are Honduras’ biggest tourist attraction, the islands feel less commercialized than many other Caribbean destinations. Dive prices and certifications are among the cheapest in the world and jungle coastline still outnumbers beachfront estates. Bay Island reef diversity is unmatched, so if you don’t want to bother with scuba certification, snorkeling in the crystal clear water is almost as fun. Utila, just 32km by boat from La Ceiba, is the most budget-friendly island and is famous for sightings of the rare whale shark, the biggest fish in the sea. Roatán is the most developed of the islands with gorgeous beaches and phenomenal snorkeling. Once ravaged by Hurrican Mitch, Guanaja is now a sparsely populated island, perfect for private romantic getaways. Cayos Cochinos, with their beautiful tropical vegetation, are a miniature version of the main islands.
