The region most severely devastated by the civil war, Eastern El Salvador is still recovering from its days as the FMLN stronghold. Economic recovery is well on its way, even though the government still tends to favor the less rebellious West. San Miguel, with its long and rich history, is the biggest city in the “Wild East” and an ideal transportation hub to most sites. Perquín’s Museo de la Revolución Salvadoreña and La Ruta de la Paz shock and humble visitors through stark and powerful civil war testaments. The eastern beaches west of the Golfo de Fonseca are rather underdeveloped in terms of tourist facilities, but some of them, especially El Espino, are among the most beautiful in Central America. Finally, do not forget to stop by Ilobasco on your way east; their ceramics are internationally renowned.
