Less rugged than the Highlands to the north and more subdued than the cities to the south, central Scotland has draws all of its own. The eastern shoulder, curving from Fife to the Highland Boundary Fault along the North Sea, has centuries-old communities and historical landmarks. To the west, the landscape flattens from snow-covered peaks into the plains of the Central Lowlands. Escape Celts and kilts in the remote Inner Hebrides, where palm trees, stucco homes, and sandy beaches offer a relaxing change from the mainland.
