Campania (cam-PAH-nee-ah) is a land of contrasts, where a chaotic, modern city, a wealth of remarkably preserved Roman ruins, and a coastline of peaceful villages all coexist. The beautiful centro storico in Naples draws visitors to the area, and the nearby islands’ emerald waters embrace them when the city’s frenetic disorder overwhelms. Nearby, the preserved ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum attest to the destructive power of Mt. Vesuvius, which remains a constant—and yes, very active—threat. One of Italy’s poorest regions, Campania has withstood natural disasters and foreign invasions, but its people have managed to cultivate and sustain a unique, carefree attitude—the region’s true treasure.
