Often called Corsica’s Côte d’Azur, Calvi (cal-vee; pop. 5700) has some of the best and worst traits of that better-known coastline. With all the hoopla of any ritzy coastal resort, Calvi abounds with swanky nightspots, local artwork, overpriced knick-knacks, and the tourists to shell out money for it all. However, beyond the souvenir shops and gleaming white yachts, Calvi has elements of the rugged beauty and solitude that make Corsica unique. A star-shaped citadel above town, endless cliffside beaches, and rocky peaks are an attraction for both high- and low-rolling visitors. Rollicking nightlife—the best on the island—draws party-seekers from all over, and a series of beachfront campsites makes Calvi a choice backpacker destination.
