Dynamic Corte (kohr-tay; pop. 6000, when school is in 10,000) sits near the center of the island between snowcapped peaks. The location is fitting, as Corte is considered the intellectual and political heart of Corsica, despite its relatively small size. Home of the island’s university, Universita di Corsica, the town gave birth to Pascal Paoli’s constitution and remains the center of Corsica’s nationalist cause, evidenced by the nationalist slogans graffitied on various public buildings throughout the town. Locals have made a serious effort to keep Corsican traditions alive; most speak Corse, a language similar to Italian dialects, in addition to French. It’s easy to understand the pride of this inland city—perched above the convergence of three rivers, Corte is an eyeful of plunging cliffs and jagged summits that provide Corsica’s best hiking.
