For outdoor adventure enthusiasts, the Baja peninsula boasts a handful of lush natural reserves, including the Parque Nacional Sierra San Pedro Mártir, where you can climb the peninsula’s highest peak, Picacho del Diablo. Back on the mainland, set up camp among the peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, hike through the wind-whipped deserts of Chihuahua, or traverse one of the many trails along the Copper Canyon. The northern state of Sonora, overlooking the Sea of Cortés, is home to El Pinacate volcanic preserve, one of the most dramatic biospheres in the world, where you can lay out your sleeping bag in a massive volcanic crater. To the east, in Tamaulipas, Ciudad Victoria provides easy access to El Cielo Reserva de la Biosfera, an immense nature reserve brimming with exotic wildlife and plants. Southeast Mexico offers its own riches, in areas like the lagoon at Catemaco, the Parque Nacional de la Villa Luz outside Villahermosa, and the cenote-filled jungles surrounding Tulum (see p. 685).
