Budget accommodations are not hard to find in Mexico, though things may get pricier in resort towns. All hotels, from luxury resorts in Cancún to rent-by-the-hour joints in Tijuana, are controlled by the government’s Secretaria de Turismo (SECTUR). This ensures that hotels of similar quality charge similar prices; you should always ask to see an up-to-date official tariff sheet if you doubt the quoted price. Many hotels post their official tariffs somewhere near the reception area. Although hotel prices are regulated, proprietors are not prohibited from charging less than the official rate. A little bargaining can work wonders, especially if you stay several days.
