Mosquitoes Will Destroy You. Protect yourself from mosquito bites, which may transmit diseases like malaria . Mosquitoes bite through thin fabric, so cover up as much as possible with thicker materials. 100% DEET is useful, but the mosquitoes are so ravenous that nothing short of a mosquito hood and netting stops every jab.
Ticks. To prevent tick bites, exercise the same caution as you would for mosquitoes. When camping, check your site for ticks. Ticks usually bite between your toes, behind your knees or neck, on your head, in your armpits, or around your groin. Damage from ticks can often be prevented by removing them as quickly as possible with a pair of tweezers. Ticks are known to transmit Lyme disease . If bitten, seek medical attention immediately.
Snakes. The pit viper, a yellow snake found in the rainforests of southern Mexico, rarely descends from its tree; however, a bite can be fatal, especially if it occurs on the arms or neck. A bite from the fer-de-lance, found on farms in southern Mexico, can also be deadly. Its coloration varies from gray to olive to reddish-brown. Rattlesnakes, brown in color and known for their rattle-like sound, are found in northern deserts and other dry areas, as well as in southern Mexico. If you are bitten by a snake, go to a hospital immediately. Most bites do not lead to death. Do not ice or otherwise irritate the wound, as this may lead to the need for amputation. Do not try to suck out the venom on your own! Instead, leave the bite untouched and elevate the limb.
Lizards. There are some poisonous lizards found in Mexico. The Gila Monster in the northwest has dark skin with pink coloration and is 35-45cm long. The Mexican Beaded Lizard looks like the Gila and is also poisonous. Never try to touch or pick up one of these lizards. If bitten, seek medical help immediately. Bites are not usually fatal to humans.
Wild Cattle And Non-Domestic Animals. Wild cattle have been known to attack people. This should not be a concern in most tourist areas, but those spending time in more remote places should be aware of the possibility. Note that non-domestic animals may have rabies, and it is best to steer clear and avoid touching stray and wild animals.
