Despite Mexico’s conservative and Catholic traditions, there is little violence against GBLT travelers in large metropolitan areas. In addition, discrimination by sexual orientation is illegal in Mexico. However, homosexuality is frowned upon at best, and intolerance is especially rampant in more rural areas of the country, where displays of affection may attract harassment. More urban areas are generally more accepting of homosexuality; there are large gay-rights movements in Acapulco, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Puerto Vallarta. The best rule of thumb is to avoid public displays of affection until you know you are in a safe and accepting environment, such as one afforded by gay-friendly clubs and establishments (of which there are many). Whenever possible, Let’s Go: Mexico lists gay- and lesbian-friendly establishments; the best way to find out about the many others that we do not list is to consult organizations, mail-order bookstores, and publishers that offer materials addressing gay and lesbian concerns (see below). Out and About (www.planetout.com) is a comprehensive site that offers a weekly newsletter addressing travel concerns. The online newspaper 365gay.com also has a travel section (www.365gay.com/travel/travelchannel.htm).
