Mexico’s official language is castellano (standard Spanish), spoken smoothly and without the lisp that characterizes speakers from Spain. More than 50 traditional languages, spoken by over 100,000 people in the country, remain strong links to Mexico’s rich cultural past. In the Valley of Mexico, one can often hear the Aztec language, Náhuatl; in the Yucatán Peninsula and Chiapas, Mayan is frequently spoken in villages and markets; Zapotec is still spoken in the Oaxaca Valley.
