Mexico Fiction

  • Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate), by Laura Esquivel (1989). A piquant, internationally-acclaimed Mexican love story. The 1992 film was nominated for a US Golden Globe.
  • La muerte de Artemio Cruz (The Death of Artemio Cruz), by Carlos Fuentes (1975). A work of historical fiction dealing with Spain and Latin America, written by one of Mexico’s most prominent novelists.
  • Mexico, by James Michener (1992). The master of historical fiction explores Mexico’s evolution from ancient civilization to modern nation, interpreted through the experiences of various period characters.
  • Pedro Páramo, by Juan Rulfo (1955). A haunting tale of life and death set in rural Mexico; Rulfo’s masterpiece (and only novel).
