In contrast to Provence’s northern hills, the Camargue is a humid delta populated by all manner of wildlife. Pink flamingoes, black bulls, and the famous white horses roam freely across the flat expanse of marshland, protected by the confines of the national park. The Camargue is anchored in the north by Arles and in the south by Stes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the region’s official capital and base for expeditions. Bring bug spray: the Camargue breeds mosquitoes.
