The second-largest Cycladic island, Andros is a weekend destination for Greece’s wealthy ship captains, many of whose families originated here. In an attempt to keep their hideaway unspoiled, the residents have restricted ferry access to the island. Pockets of civilization are tucked into Andros’s mountain ranges, and narrow roads weave around their peaks and valleys down to the coast below. Though Athenians crowd in on the weekends, Andros generally remains a serene escape for international tourists who delight in untrodden ground and quiet nights.
