Pieces of Paros are sprinkled throughout the Western world in the form of its famed translucent marble. Many of antiquity’s most celebrated statues and buildings—the Venus de Milo, the Nike of Samothrace, and parts of Napoleon’s mausoleum in Paris—took their materials from this island. Seemingly bottomless Parian quarries still export regularly. The island comes alive in summer, when the golden beaches and lovely mountains teem with travelers. The main port of Parikia is more relaxed than other Cycladic cities, but parties in the small port of Naoussa stretch into the wee hours of the morning.
