King Minos of Crete was said to rule a kingdom on Amorgos in ancient times, a legend supported by the 1985 discovery of artifacts atop Mt. Moudoulia. Today, much of Amorgos resembles its most enduring sight, the Hozoviotissa Monastery, which burrows into the cliffs below Chora. The steep, barren cliffs and clear waters were captured 20 years ago in the film The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu), and Amorgos’s stunning natural beauty has not changed much since the movie’s filming. Though tourism has boomed recently, Amorgos’s small size and tight-knit local community have preserved the tranquility and local feel of its port towns. Ferry connections generally stop at Amorgos’s two ports in succession—Aegiali in the northeast and larger Katapola in the southwest.
