Most travelers to New Zealand visit during the sunny summer months (Nov.-Feb.), when temperatures are warmer, mountain peaks are accessible, and the tourist infrastructure is in high gear. High-season visitors can access the greatest variety of outdoors options but will also be faced with the largest crowds. Low season occurs during the dead of winter (May-Sept.), when many tours and activities, with the exception of skiing and snowboarding, shut down. The best combination of weather, availability, and crowd size occurs during the “shoulder” seasons (Mar.-Apr. and Oct.-Nov.), although in some popular areas such as Queenstown and Taupo the crowds continue year-round. Travelers from the Northern Hemisphere should remember that seasons reverse when crossing the equator.
