The mesmerizing Tatras, spanning the border between Slovakia and Poland, form the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range. The High Tatras feature sky-scraping hikes, glacial lakes, and deep snows. Sadly, many of the lower slopes on the Slovak side of the High Tatras were devastated by freak storms and mudslides in the fall of 2004, and vast swaths of the formerly lush pine forest are now brown fields of broken trees. Recent forest fires further scarred the landscape, though the upper regions escaped largely unscathed. To the south, the separate Low Tatras have ski resorts and tree-covered mountains.
