The diverse beauty of Thailand’s physical expanse is a geographer’s dream and a cartographer’s headache. Despite the country’s small size, it contains a plethora of topological features. It is perhaps best known for its southern kos (islands), whose white beaches, coral reefs, gushing waterfalls, and shimmering turquoise waters have drawn paradise seekers the world over. Still, the mainland holds gems of its own. From the river-rich and peak-encrusted north crowned by Doi Inthanon (Thailand’s highest point), to the fertile “rice bowl” that is the central plains, to the semi-arid plateau that blankets the northeast and meets the mighty Mekong River, every corner is a visual feast.
