The center of Europe’s oldest monarchy and the largest city in Scandinavia, Copenhagen (pop. 1,800,000) embodies a laid-back spirit. Historically, a major Baltic port with many canals and lakes, the city’s lush greenways encourage a sense of pride among its inhabitants. The Strøget, the city’s famed pedestrian thoroughfare, now bustles with Middle Eastern restaurants and cybercafes, and neon signs glimmer next to angels in the architecture. The up-and-coming districts of Vesterbro and Nørrebro reverberate with some of Europe’s wildest nightlife, while the hippie paradise of Christiania swings to a more downbeat vibe. Despite its size, Copenhagen manages to hold on to its small town appeal with its narrow streets dotted by gabled houses.
