Since its days as a fishing village and naval base, Frederikshavn (fred-riks-HOW-n; pop. 35,000) has evolved into a transportation hub for Scandinavian ferry lines. Stena Line ferries (☎9620 0222; www.stenaline.com) leave for Gothenburg, SWE. Color Line (☎9956 1977; www.colorline.com) ferries sail to Larvik, NOR. To get from the station to the Frederikshavn Vandrerhjem (HI) , Buhlsv. 6, walk right on Skipperg. for 10min., turn left onto Nørreg., and take a right at the second light on Buhlsv. Restaurants and shops cluster along Søndergade and Havnegade; Rådhus Allé has several grocery stores. To get to the commercial area from the train station, turn left and cross Skipperg. The Frederikshavn Kirke, a church with a huge anchor on its front lawn, will be on the left. Walk up one block to Danmarksg., the main pedestrian thoroughfare, and turn left. Danmarksg. becomes Sønderg. and intersects with Havneg. Head to Bangspo Park to take in a bit of lush. The Powder Tower (Kruot Tarnet), also located in the park (☎9843 1919), showcases powder and cannon displays (open June-Aug. Tu-Su 10am-5pm, 15kr).
