Located on Denmark’s northernmost tip, Skagen is a small fisherman’s wharf. The picturesque town is framed by stunning ice-blue waters lined with sandy white beaches. The Skagens Museum, Brøndumsv. 4, features 19th- and 20th-century landscape paintings by local artists. From the train station, walk left down Sct. Laurentii V. and turn right on Brøndumsv. At nearby Grenen, tourists and locals alike have the unique opportunity to stand in two seas simultaneously and watch as the currents of the North and Baltic Seas collide in rhythm. Take the bus from the Skagen station (15kr; last return 7:30pm) or walk 5km down Fyrv. You can even take a tractor to the tip of Denmark. (☎9844 5024; www.sandormen.dk, round-trip 20kr., starting at 9am daily). About 13km south of Skagen is the Råberg Mile (ROH-bayrg MEE-leh), a sand dune formed by a 16th-century storm. The dune resembles a vast moonscape and migrates 15m east each year. Take bus #99 or the train from Skagen to Hulsig, then walk 4km down Kandestedv. Each July, the town welcomes Irish fiddlers and Scandinavian troubadours for the Skagen Folk Music Festival (☎9844 4094; www.skagenfestival.dk).
Reserve well ahead at the popular Skagen Ny Vandrerhjem , Rolighedsv. 2. From the station, turn right on Chr. X’s V., which becomes Frederikshavnv., then go left on Rolighedsv. Laurentii V. to get to an area of restaurants near Havnevej . In the town center, Orchid Thai Restaurant , Sct. Laurentii V. 60, offers authentic, cheap, and filling lunch boxes for 35kr. Trains run from Skagen to Frederikshavn (40min., weekdays every hr., weekends 4 per day, 48kr). Rent bikes at Cykelhandler, Kappelborgv. 23; around the corner from the tourist office (☎9844 2528. 20kr per hr., 60kr per day. Open M-F 8am-5:30pm, Sa 9:30am-noon. Cash only.) To get to the tourist office, Vestre Strandvej 10, turn right from the station onto Sct. Laurentii V., left on to Havnev., and right onto Havneplads. (☎9844 1377; www.skagen-tourist.dk.
