Thailand uses the metric system. The basic unit of length is the meter (m), which is divided into 100 centimeters (cm) or 1000 millimeters (mm). One thousand meters make up one kilometer (km). Fluids are measured in liters (L), each divided into 1000 milliliters (mL). A liter of pure water weighs one kilogram (kg), the unit of mass that is divided into 1000 grams (g). One metric ton is 1000kg. The only non-metric measurements used in Thailand are units of area; 1 rai is 1600 square meters, 1 ngaan is 400 square meters, and 1 waa for 4 square meters.
