Cheltenham (pop. 110,000), also known as Cheltenham Spa, is a small but well-to-do city. Ever since George III sampled its waters in 1788, the town has flourished. Cheltenham’s reputation as a fashionable place of leisure is evident in its upscale restaurants, spacious gardens, and trendy boutiques. On weekends, students from the University of Gloucestershire pack the pubs and clubs, energizing the city center. Although it has few important sights, Cheltenham continues to draw visitors as the most convenient base for exploring the Cotswolds.
