No need to fear—the Slaughters got their names from the Old English word slough, meaning “stream.” The towns, complete with bubbling brooks, are a few miles southwest of Stow. The less touristed and more charming Lower Slaughter is connected to its sister village, Upper Slaughter, by the Warden’s Way. In Lower Slaughter, the Old Mill, Mill Ln., scoops water from the river that flows past. A mill has stood on this spot for 1000 years. (☎01451 820 052; www.oldmill-lowerslaughter.com. Open in summer daily 10am-6pm. £1.25.)
