USA Minority Travelers

The US is a multicultural nation, but general attitudes toward race relations in the US differ from region to region. Racial and ethnic minorities sometimes face blatant or subtle discrimination and/or harassment. Remain calm and report individuals to a supervisor and establishments to the Better Business Bureau for the region (www.bbb.org, or call the operator for local listings); contact the police in extreme situations. Let’s Go always welcomes reader input regarding discriminatory establishments. Be aware that racial tensions do exist, even in large, ostensibly progressive areas, and try to avoid confrontations.

In towns along the US-Mexican border, the Border Patrol for the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) remains on a constant lookout for Mexican nationals who have crossed the border illegally. In border towns, they may pull over anyone who looks suspicious, search their vehicles for smuggled goods or people, and ask for identification.
