USA Literacy Programs
A quarter of American adults are not proficient in reading. Many experience difficulties because they did not finish high
school, while others are immigrants or persons suffering from learning or vision disabilities.
- America’s Literacy Directory (☎800-228-8813; www.literacydirectory.org/volunteer.asp). A service of the National Institute for Literacy, this online directory allows
you to search for volunteer opportunities among more than 5000 literacy programs for adults and young adults.
- Proliteracy Worldwide, 1320 Jamesville Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210 (☎888-528-2224 or 315-422-9121; www.proliteracy.org). The world’s largest adult volunteer literacy organization, with chapters in the US.
Tutors teach basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to individuals and families.
- Reading is Fundamental, Inc., 1825 Connecticut Ave. NW, Ste. 400, Washington, D.C. 20009 (☎877-RIF-READ or 202-536-3400; www.rif.org). Oldest and largest family literacy program in the US. Volunteers can get involved
nationwide by participating in readings at public libraries, fundraising, and organizing book orders for community events.
