Macedonia Μακεδονία Overview

Macedonia earned itself a place in history when its native son Alexander forged a massive empire stretching to Egypt and India by 323 BC. A few centuries later, the region served as the geographical entry point for St. Paul, who brought Christianity to Europe. The historical boundaries of Greek Macedonia under the Byzantine Empire were much greater than the modern province’s current territory; pieces of the historical region of Macedonia lie within Albania, Bulgaria, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. In recent decades, Macedonia has become the focal point of tensions between northern Greece and the Balkan states as Greeks have demanded exclusive use of the name “Macedonia” and even the return of formerly Hellenic lands. Despite its identity struggle, Macedonia is one of Greece’s most multidimensional provinces. Offering a range of attractions—excellent archaeological sites, peaceful beaches, and beautiful and burgeoning urban areas—Macedonia keeps its visitors intrigued with endless surprises and historical flavor.
