The postcard-worthy towns of Epirus see their share of tourism, but the Zagorohoria villages near the Vikos Gorge have retained a timeless feeling, despite a recent influx of visitors. Epirus links itself to a living past—the old dialect of Vlach, descended from Latin, is still spoken in some of the towns, and the preserved mosques of the dynamic 19th-century ruler Ali Pasha still grace the city of Ioannina.
