In rural Elia and Achaia, pebble beaches near coastal plain port cities are as much a regional attraction as the jagged mountains rising dramatically inland. Summers bring locals and travelers alike to the inviting shores of the Mediterranean, while in winter Greeks and tourists head to higher ground to ski. The mountainous region was first settled by Achaians from the Argolid, and later ruled by Romans. Afterward, Franks, Ottomans, and Venetians all violently disputed this land, leaving a visible wake in the occasional ruins that crop up across the area’s terrain.
