Visitors to Laconia, most famous as the home to ancient Greece’s most formidable city-state, Sparta, will find the terrain surprisingly un-spartan in its offerings. With some of the Peloponnese’s highest peaks, the region features craggy mountains. Ancient olive groves and ruins hint at the long history that has unfolded in Laconia over the centuries. While Sparta’s name may attract you to the region, the cities are not where you will find the true essence of Laconia. Head on the roads winding between orchards and hike the surrounding peaks. There you will discover plenty of accommodations and campgrounds hidden in the web between the urban centers.
