Mani gets its name from the Greek word manis, which means “wrath” or “fury.” Sparsely settled and encircling the intimidating Taygetus Mountains, the region juts out vulnerably into the surrounding sea. During Roman times, Mani founded the league of Free Laconians and threw off Spartan domination. Ever since, Maniots have resisted foreign rule, boasting even today that not one Ottoman set foot on their soil. While historically fierce and proud of it, Maniots are warm hosts to those who visit their well-preserved villages and unique, gray stone tower houses. Home to Byzantine ruins, small fishing villages, world-class beaches, and the famous Caretta sea turtle, Mani continues to surprise visitors with its diversity. The landscape follows suit: the lush north gives way to stark southern mountains, which stand out against the piercing blue oceans and endless stretches of sand and pebbles.
