The US uses Imperial (English) units of measure as well as the metric system. For Imperial units, the basic unit of measure is the yard (yd.), which is divided into three feet (foot; ft.), or 36 inches (in.). There are 1760 yards in a mile (mi.). Fluids are measured by the pint (pt.), which is composed of 20 fluid ounces (oz.). There are two pints in a quart (qt.), and eight pints in a gallon (gal.). For the metric system, the basic unit of length is the meter (m), which is divided into 100 centimeters (cm), or 1000 millimeters (mm). One thousand meters make up one kilometer (km). Fluids are measured in liters (L), each divided into 1000 milliliters (ml). A liter of pure water weighs one kilogram (kg), divided into 1000 grams (g), while 1000kg make up one metric ton.
