Karpathos Κάρπαθος Overview

Karpathos is one of the most beautiful and friendly islands of the Dodacanese. Although the pale-green coastline and austere mountains have drawn a steady flow of tourists over the past 50 years, Karpathians have resisted the “us vs. them” mentality so pervasive among locals in other popular areas. The mass Karpathian exodus to the United States during the WWII Italian occupation has led many islanders to consider the US a second home and American tourists as long-lost cousins. Karpathos is also known for its revolutionary spirit; islanders pride themselves on being the first of the Dodecanese islands to expel the Italians in 1946, eventually leading to the reunification of the islands with Greece. Ancient cultural traditions have been preserved in the northern villages, where you can still hear strains of Ancient Greek dialects being spoken in the tavernas. Its dramatic landscape and remarkable hospitality make Karpathos an ideal stop for beach bums, mountain men, and anyone wanting to kick it with the locals.
