Brightly-painted houses bloom like wildflowers on the cliffs overlooking Symi’s main port, which has welcomed the incoming boats of sailors, fishermen, and sponge divers for thousands of years. Each of the colonial homes has a unique artistic flourish and individual charm preserved by strict historic conservation laws. While many travelers only stop here for a day between Rhodes and Kos, Symi’s beautiful views, delicious cuisine, and friendly townspeople merit a longer visit. The island is tourist-oriented enough to be accessible, but not so much that it overrides the authentic atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to linger with the locals. Panormitis Monastery, on the southern side of the island, remains one of the holiest places in Greek Orthodoxy and an important point of pilgrimage.
