Nisyros is most famous for its active volcano, which draws wannabe geologists with its sulfur crystals and steaming craters. Daytripping tourists move in predictable, daily cycles from the dock to the volcano to the waterfront tavernas, but the rest of the island is a peaceful place to unwind and take in the views. Quiet villages away from the volcano are made up of winding streets and whitewashed, cubic architecture typical of the Dodecanese, though this area is often completely ignored by tourists. Relics dating back to the Classical and Byzantine eras sprinkle the rocky beaches and craggy mountains that make up this rugged but beautiful island.
