Compared to the dry, craggy rock faces of the Dodecanese, Samos is refreshingly green. The lush mountainsides slope gently into crystal seas, making a perfect landscape for quiet walking. Once the home of Pythagoras and Aristarchus (who speculated that the Earth revolved around the sun 1,800 years before Copernicus), Samos retains a proud Greek culture that has remained largely free of Turkish influence despite its proximity to the Turkish mainland.
