Most travelers escape to Puerto Rico between December and April when the weather up north is miserable and the island’s climate is at its prime. As a result, hotels in San Juan, Culebra, and Vieques raise their rates during this season. If you want to travel during this time, the best solution is to go to parts of the island that are less frequented by foreigners, such as the southern and western coasts, or the central mountains. The high season on these parts of the island is from May to November. Puerto Ricans travel during school vacations—primarily Christmas (late Dec.), Semana Santa (the week before Easter), and summer (June-Aug.)—filling up accommodations and beaches nearly everywhere outside of San Juan. It may be best not to make travel plans during these times, but if you do, make reservations in advance. During the summer, Puerto Rico is at its hottest and most humid. Hurricane season officially lasts from June to November, but most storms are in August and September. Traveling during this time is risky: a hurricane will almost certainly ruin any vacation, but if there is no hurricane (most of the time) travelers will enjoy empty beaches and major hotel discounts. Surf season in Puerto Rico runs from November to mid-April.
