Everyone agrees that Puerto Rico’s best diving is at Isla Mona , which boasts hundreds of dive sites and visibility up to 180 ft. However, the 4hr. journey takes a lot of planning and even more money. For a similar but more accessible option, try Rincón, where boats leave almost daily for Isla Desecheo , an offshore island surrounded by thriving reefs. A completely different dive experience awaits off the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. Six miles offshore, a dramatic sea wall starts at 60 ft. and then seems to disappear completely as a sheer cliff descends to over 150 ft. The best place to access “The Wall” is the spirited pueblo of La Parguera . One of Puerto Rico’s most bizarre dive spots can be found just off the coast of Aguadilla , where hundreds of old tires have been transformed into an artificial reef. Visitors who want a slightly cheaper glimpse of the island’s underwater world are in luck—some of the best snorkeling opportunities can be found off the coasts of Vieques , La Parguera , and Isla Caja de Muertos . Culebra , Isabela , Isla Mona , Rincón , San Juan , and La Cordillera off the northeastern coast also offer snorkeling spots of varying quality.
